Roll Grinding to 0.01 mm and Ra 0.2 µm
Cylindrical grinding of new and worn rolls up to Ø3,200 mm, on ten cylindrical grinders from Naxos-Union, Schmaltz, Cincinnati and more. Plus internal, surface and knife grinding.

Long-Bed Roll Grinders at Work

What Roll Grinding Does for a Roll
After turning, a roll is close to size but not yet precise: there is runout, ovality and a turned surface with tool marks. In cylindrical grinding, the roll rotates between centres while a fine-grain grinding wheel removes a thin layer of material. The result is a roll that is round, concentric with its journals and finished to a smooth, even surface.
- Size and runout to 0.01 mm on rolls
- Surface finish down to Ra 0.2 µm
- ±0.005 mm on precision cylindrical and flat parts
- Crowned and tapered profiles on request
- Grinding before and after hard chrome plating

Questions About Roll Grinding
What size rolls can you grind?
Up to Ø3,200 mm. Our standard cylindrical grinders cover Ø320 to Ø1,000 mm and lengths up to 4,000 mm; larger rolls are ground on request.
What accuracy can you achieve?
0.01 mm size and runout on rolls, ±0.005 mm on precision parts, and surface finish down to Ra 0.2 µm.
Do you regrind worn rolls?
Yes. Worn, scored and out-of-round rolls are reground, and rechromed or recovered if required.
Do you grind industrial knives?
Yes. Slitting knives, shear blades, granulator blades and cobalt HSS knives.
Roll Grinding for Process Lines and Conveyors
Precision rolls in paper, film, printing, steel and food lines are only as good as their last grinding. Over time they wear, score and lose their crown, and the product shows it. Regular regrinding restores the roll for a fraction of the cost of a new one.
New rolls and regrinding
We grind new process rolls and large rollers as part of manufacturing, and regrind worn rolls sent in for service as part of roller repair and refurbishment.
Grinding with chrome
Chrome-plated rolls need grinding before and after plating. Because grinding and hard chrome plating happen with us, the whole sequence stays in one place. Send your roll drawing or worn roll data via the contact page.
Sending rolls for regrinding
To regrind a worn roll, send us its drawing or the main dimensions, the required finished diameter or minimum diameter, the surface finish and any crown. We grind the roll back to a true, smooth surface, remove as little material as possible, and report the finished diameter so you can track how much stock is left for future regrinds.
Grinding for other manufacturers
Our grinding department also works as a subcontractor for machine builders and roll manufacturers who need precision cylindrical, internal or surface grinding without owning the machines. Parts can be delivered turned and returned ground, or we can take over turning and grinding together.
Industries that use our grinding
Our grinding department serves paper and converting mills, film and printing lines, steel and metal processors, food machinery builders and hydraulic cylinder manufacturers, as well as our own roller production.
